GREAT VISUALS: Families, graduates from 117 countries to share congratulations with hugs, kisses and tears; graduates decorate caps and gowns with messages, flowers, cultural attire

WHAT:
San Francisco State University's 104th Commencement exercises. About 4,000 students of the 7,832 graduates -- comprising the University's largest graduating class ever -- will receive their degrees before a crowd of 20,000.

WHO:

  • Ben Fong-Torres, a writer, broadcaster and journalist who has interviewed hundreds of world-famous musicians and actors for stories in Rolling Stone and other magazines and newspapers over the last four decades, will deliver the keynote speech.
  • Ralf Hotchkiss, chief engineer for the SFSU Urban Institute-based Whirlwind Wheelchair International, will receive the President's Medal for Service for his efforts to help people in developing countries to build and repair low-cost, sturdy and highly mobile wheelchairs.
  • bebe stores inc. founder and chairman Manny Mashouf is the SFSU Alumnus of the Year.
  • Natasha Lee Scholtz, an economics graduate and community volunteer with plans to become a high-school teacher, is the student speaker.
  • Other standout students include: Jessica Diane Jones, who, at 19 is earning a bachelor's in English literature, is SFSU's youngest graduate this year; Kathy Ryan Collis and James Valoria, a mother and son earning their bachelor's degrees together; Lisa Yong Wu, a Chinese immigrant who has already published chemistry research in professional journals; and many others with inspiring stories and plans to make a difference in the world.

WHEN and WHERE:
Saturday, May 28. Procession begins at 12:15 p.m. in Cox Stadium, located behind the Gymnasium on the SFSU campus (see attached map), 1600 Holloway Ave. (at 19th Avenue), San Francisco. Commencement speeches begin at 1 p.m., and graduates throw their mortarboards in celebration at about 2:15 p.m.

Reserved parking for credentialed media: located in front of the SFSU Public Safety building on North State Drive (off Lake Merced Boulevard). From the parking area, walk to the top floor of the parking structure, then proceed southeast toward the main campus and Cox Stadium.
