Annual event offers scientific fun for the whole family
SAN FRANCISCO, September 11, 2002
TIBURON, California – On Sunday, Oct. 6, children and adults can explore the natural wonders of the San Francisco Bay during “DISCOVERY DAY,” an interactive science festival and open house at the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC).
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the 25-acre bay-front research facility at 3150 Paradise Drive in Tiburon will open its doors to the public for a FREE day of educational fun that includes marine animal touch tanks, science exhibits, live music, arts, crafts, food and more.
DISCOVERY DAY is an annual event that offers the public a behind-the-scenes look at the scientific research conducted at the Center, from investigating alien species lurking along the coast to learning about the tiny plants and animals that call the Bay home. In addition to science- and art-related activities for children, the festival will include exhibits and presentations by RTC scientists and students highlighting the Center’s contributions to understanding and caring for the San Francisco Bay environment and beyond.
“We hope to spark scientific aspirations in the children who visit us during DISCOVERY DAY,” said RTC Director Alissa Arp.
As San Francisco State University’s marine research field station, the Center also fulfills an academic mission by educating college students. Working with RTC scientists in the lab, on the water and in the classroom, students receive an invaluable research experience.
DISCOVERY DAY features music performed by the SFSU Jazz Band as well as a BBQ prepared by the Tiburon Volunteer Fire Department. Plenty of free parking is available on-site.
The Romberg Tiburon Center is dedicated to the study of the Bay, its surrounding environment and the global understanding of estuaries and other marine habitats.
