SAN FRANCISCO, July 19, 2002 WHAT: In celebration of the 10th anniversary of its founding, the Bay Area-based HAPA Issues Forum will hold its national conference at San Francisco State University. Organized by S.F. State's Wei Ming Dariotis, one of the nation's few Asian American Studies scholars on Hapa issues, the gathering is expected to attract as many as 300 Asian Pacific Islanders of mixed heritage who will examine issues of identity in America. The conference comes as the 2000 Census reports that Asian Americans of mixed heritage are a fast growing population. Census data also shows that Asian Americans marry partners of different races at about three times the rate of African Americans and five times the rate of whites. Nearly a quarter of all the country's mixed-marriage couples live in California. WHEN: : 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 20 and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21.
