GREAT VISUALS: Families, graduates from across the globe to share lifelong memories and shed tears of joy; graduates decorate caps and gowns with messages, flowers, cultural attire

SAN FRANCISCO, May 24, 2002

WHO: More than 3,700 graduates, of 7,186 total, comprising the largest graduating class in San Francisco State University history, will receive their degrees at the University's 101st Commencement on Saturday. An expected crowd of 22,000 will hear keynote speaker Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, who as minority whip is the highest-ranking woman ever in Congress.

Honored guests include:

  • Honorary Degree recipient Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity International, which has fulfilled the dream of owning a home for more than half a million people across the world;
  • Alumnus of the Year Peter Casey, co-creator and executive producer of "Frasier;"
  • President's Medal recipient Vernon Alley, a legendary San Francisco jazz musician;
  • President's Medal recipient John H. Jacobs, former head of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and San Francisco Planning and Urban Research (SPUR) Association;
  • and Glendy Chan, honored as the top graduate in the SFSU College of Business, who will speak on behalf of the class of 2002.

WHEN: Noon to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 25. Processional into the stadium begins at 12:15 p.m. Program begins at 1 p.m. Keynote speech begins at about 2 p.m.

WHERE: Cox Stadium, behind the San Francisco State University gymnasium, 1600 Holloway Ave. (at 19th Avenue), San Francisco. (A map of the SFSU campus is attached.)
