SAN FRANCISCO, July 6, 2001 ¾ San Francisco State University awards more undergraduate business degrees to Asian Americans than any other institution in the United States, according to a national survey published in a recent issue of Black Issues in Higher Education.

SFSU awarded 541 baccalaureate degrees in business management and administration services to Asian Americans in 1999-2000, according to the Top 100 Degree Producers survey. In recent years, the University consistently ranked second in this category.

"We are proud that San Francisco State University is consistently recognized as one of the nation's top producers of Asian American business graduates, and of other minority graduates in a wide range of disciplines," SFSU President Robert A. Corrigan said. "These rankings not only reflect the University's commitment to providing the highest quality of education to people of all backgrounds, but also demonstrate our strong impact and far-reaching influence in the business communities of San Francisco, Silicon Valley and the Pacific Rim."

The survey also ranked SFSU 13th nationwide in awarding baccalaureate degrees to all minorities. The University awarded 1,900 baccalaureate degrees to minorities in the 1999-2000 academic year, comprising 47.7 percent of SFSU's entire graduating class. This shows a 2.4 percent increase from last year's rankings.

SFSU ranked second nationwide in awarding baccalaureate degrees to Asian Americans in education, seventh in English language/literature/letters, and eighth in area/ethnic/cultural studies.

Researchers at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis conducted the 10th annual Top 100 Degree Producers survey using data from the 1999-2000 academic year compiled by the U.S. Department of Education. Rankings are based on the numbers of baccalaureate degrees awarded to minorities at universities across the country. The survey was published in the June 7 issue of Black Issues in Higher Education.

The fourth largest campus in the 23-campus California State University system, SFSU was founded in 1899 and today is a highly diverse, comprehensive, public and urban university of nearly 27,000 students.
