WHO: The 10 hood recipients are chosen to represent their fellow students from each of SFSU's academic Colleges, the liberal studies program and the graduate division. Each hood recipient is an outstanding student with a unique story and an ambitious plan for the future. Background on a couple of these students:

• Few people thought Lamitra Baez would go to college, especially when she got pregnant at 17. She proved them wrong, endured a nearly two-hour commute to SFSU and now graduates with a degree in communicative disorders. Three years ago she was in a terrible car accident that left her bedridden for eight months. Once she returned to SFSU she would often bring pillows and lie down on classroom floors during lectures because it was too painful to sit in a chair.
  
• Emma Sanchez-Suet of San Francisco arrived in the U.S. at age 20 and knew only a few English words. She worked in an orchard picking apples, learned English and realized her calling was in health education. Fourteen years later she graduates with a master's degree in public health. In the fall Sanchez-Suet enters the doctoral program at Harvard University's School of Public Health.
