76-year-old Santa Rosa resident is among the oldest in SFSU's Class of 2001

After 16 years at SFSU, Jean Sandifer will receive master's degree at May 26 Commencement

SAN FRANCISCO, May 23, 2001 - Throughout her 76 years, Santa Rosa resident Jean Sandifer has pursued a variety of passions, from grant writing and archaeology to jewelry design, photography, painting and even Web design - the latest skill she honed.

Yet the importance Sandifer places on education is the priority of her passions. Never one to give up, she will receive her master of arts degree in industrial arts from San Francisco State University on Saturday after entering graduate school 10 years ago. Sandifer is among the oldest of SFSU's 6,575 graduates in the Class of 2001.

"Being a San Francisco State student has enabled me to share my experience with others and motivate and assist other people in self-improvement by entering higher education," she said.

As part of her final project, Sandifer has launched Funderfinders.com. The site offers grant writing, research and review services as well as a chat room for nonprofit employees to network and exchange ideas.

"To me, the Internet is the window to the world," she said. "With the global market as it is, the Web opens up opportunities for funding that is available all over the world."

Sandifer has a long history with SFSU, dating back to 1985 when she first enrolled as a re-entry student. She earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology, with an archaeology emphasis, from SFSU in 1991. She has also completed a second bachelor's degree in art, which she will officially receive this fall.

Sandifer will miss college life dearly.

"SFSU has been my home, my family," the longtime Bay Area resident said.

After graduation, Sandifer plans to complete her written history of the SFSU Design and Industry Department, from which she will receive her master's degree. The 400-page piece documents the nearly 50-year history of the department, which offers curricula in print graphic design, digital media, product design and development, manufacturing technology, industrial technology and technology education.
