Grieg Piano Trio to perform at Morrison Artists Series

SAN FRANCISCO, February 6, 2001--The Morrison Artists Series at San Francisco State University presents the Grieg Piano Trio at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, in McKenna Theatre, located in the Creative Arts Building on campus. Admission is free.

The performance will include Beethoven's Variations in G Major "Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu," Libby Larsen's "Piano Trio" (commissioned for Grieg), and Schubert's Trio in E flat Major, Op. 100.

Since the Grieg Piano Trio (Vebjørn Anvik, piano; Sølve Sigerland, violin; and Ellen Margrete Flesjø, cello) formed in 1987, it has emerged as one of Norway's most highly praised musical treasures. The award-winning group regularly tours throughout Europe, performing in major music centers and festivals across the continent. The trio made its United States and Japan debuts in 1993 with engagements in Atlanta; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; New York; and Tokyo. Also in 1993, the Grieg Trio was awarded a Norwegian Cultural Grant, enabling it to record its first CD, "Mendelssohn Trios Nos. 1 and 2," on the Norwegian SIMAX label. The ensemble garnered international attention during the 1994 Olympic Winter Games when the Lillehammer Olympic Committee selected the trio as one its top representatives in promoting Norwegian music culture. During the course of the Olympics, the Grieg Piano Trio performed on several occasions, most notably at the opening ceremonies.

Acclaimed as "indispensable" by San Francisco Chronicle music critic Joshua Kosman, the Morrison Artists Series was created in 1952 with a bequest from the May Treat Morrison Estate. In the nearly 50 years since, the Morrison Artists Series has presented an annual program of free recitals by prominent chamber music ensembles. Kim Kashkashian will conclude this season's performances on April 22. For more information, call (415) 338-1358 or visit: www.sfsu.edu/~allarts.
