In Memoriam

Jack A. Byers
Professor of Theatre Arts Jack A. Byers, beloved colleague, mentor, teacher, friend and brilliant costume designer, passed away early in the morning on May 4. He was 83. Byers served as professor, department chair, associate dean and acting dean in the Department of Theatre Arts and the College of Creative Arts, respectively. He received his B.A. and M.A. in drama at San Jose State College. He joined SF State in 1966 and served until his retirement in 1992
.

Byers designed extensively for theatre companies, including the prestigious Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and universities such as Utah University, UC Santa Barbara and Michigan State. He was also a noted director of numerous children's plays and works by Thornton Wilder and Jean Anouilh. As a designer, Byers was especially noted for his experience in costuming for the Elizabethan stage.
