Library
Senior Assistant Librarian and Lecturer Meredith Eliassen authored the chapter "San Francisco State University's Music Federation: The Political Machine Behind a Jazz Cooperative for Teachers" that appeared in the recently published book "The Cultural Politics of Jazz Collectives: This Is Our Music" (Routledge, 2015). The chapter chronicles SF State's student-faculty organization, Music Federation, and its role in initiating the nation's first college-sanctioned jazz course called Dance Band, as well as the role of World War II veterans in making jazz part of the University's curriculum. The essay features photographs from the Vernon Alley Papers in the University Archives.
