In Memoriam

Ruth G. Doell
Professor Emerita of Biology Ruth G. Doell died in her El Granada, Calif. home on Feb. 22 at the age of 86 years. A Bay Area local, Doell obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of California, Berkeley in 1956 and then went on to become a research associate at Tufts University and later at Stanford University. In 1967, Doell joined SF State, where she taught and researched cell biology until her retirement in 1992. She was also part of SF State's pioneering interdisciplinary NEXA program
.

Doell was beloved and admired for her curiosity and breadth of knowledge by her students and colleagues alike. She was also active in political and environmental causes, and was a hospice volunteer from 2002 to 2012. Doell was preceded in death by her former husband, Richard R. Doell. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Jones, and by her two daughters, Kerstin and Shirley.
