In memoriam: Donald F. Wood

Donald F. Wood, professor of marketing, died Saturday, March 8, of a stroke. He was 68.

Wood, a Larkspur resident, joined SFSU's College of Business in 1970, shortly after completing a doctorate in economics at Harvard.

An internationally known expert in transportation and logistics, Wood taught classes in both areas. He wrote some 28 books on a variety of topics including international logistics, domestic transportation and logistics, and the history of surface transportation vehicles. He also wrote the "transportation economics" and "logistics" entries for the 1993 edition of Enyclopedia Britannica.

In addition to his teaching and research activities, Wood actively mentored many of the current faculty in the Marketing Department.

"Don took me under his wing when I joined the faculty in 1991 because of my interests in logistics," said Dan Wardlow, professor of marketing and former chair of the Department. "We collaborated as co-authors on four books. He was a diligent and demanding co-author who guided me and gave me the means to be successful as a logistics scholar."

Wood's interest in transportation extended beyond the academic sphere. Over the years, he published many books and articles about vintage trucks and was a member of the Truck Historical Society and the Hays Antique Truck Association. He co-authored "New York City Fire Trucks," a history of the Fire Department of New York equipment published last year.

"His gentle and dry sense of humor were important to all of us who had working relationships with Don," Wardlow said. "He made significant contributions to the collegial and high-spirited nature of the marketing faculty at SFSU, and his presence is sorely missed. We are all greatly saddened at his death."

Wood is survived by his wife, Doreen, and his children, Frank and Tamara.

In memoriam: Richard A. Jenner

Richard A. Jenner, professor of management, died Monday, March 10, of a heart attack. He was 71.

An expert in entrepreneurship and business competition with a doctorate in ecnomics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Jenner joined SFSU's College of Business in 1983. In addition to teaching courses on competitiveness, economics and productivity, Jenner served as director of the College's Center for Global Competitiveness. The Center fosters collaborative work between graduate students, faculty members and business executives on issues related to the competitive challenges of a global economy.

"Dick was the consummate teacher. He was an enthusiastic, energetic teacher," said Jane Baack, associate professor of management. "He got totally involved in helping his students understand the topics for the class."

Allen Appell, professor of marketing, collaborated with Jenner on several projects, traveling with him to Asia on several research projects.

"Dick was a refreshing intellect who offered unique insights into myriad subjects," he said. "To his students and colleagues his passing will make the world a less interesting place."

Jenner, a resident of Walnut Creek, is survived by his wife, Roberta Stacy, daughters, Katherine Holden, Elizabeth Jenner, Shirley Jenner and Victoria Jenner, his son, Robert Jenner, and his stepsons, Anthony, Michael and Eric Hill.

Donations can be made to the Animal Rescue Foundation, P.O. Box 30215, Walnut Creek, CA 94598 or the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, 1931 First Ave., Walnut Creek, CA 94596.
