Sutro Library in new home
The Sutro Library, part of the State Library of California, reopened on Aug. 1 on the fifth floor of the newly renovated J. Paul Leonard Library. The collection, donated to the state in 1913 by Adolph Sutro's heirs, contains a comprehensive U.S. local history collection, rare books and manuscripts and the most extensive collection of genealogical records on the West Coast. After nearly a century of moving between often cramped, temporary locations, the library has found a permanent home at SF State, allowing genealogists, historians and researchers to peruse the rich collections and resources in a spacious, well-lit reading room.
The Library Building Project, with funding from a lease revenue bond approved by the California State Governor and Legislature in 2002, enabled the move of the Sutro Library into the new space. The Sutro Library will be open to the public during the J. Paul Leonard Library hours of operation. Visit the State Library website for more information.
