Accessibility challenges
The Chronicle of Higher Education interviewed Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Gene Chelberg for a Dec. 12 article on overcoming limited funding and other challenges to implementing broad accessibility measures on campus. "Every content producer, every tech person and manager and maintenance worker -- this goes from the student workers who make eight bucks an hour to full professors -- every one of them has to understand what accessible technology is and what 508 is," Chelberg said. "Well, boom, that's not going to happen." The solution was to design a University Web template with an accessible foundation so that sites created with it meet accessibility standards.
Well being and acceptance
Research by the Family Acceptance Project and director Caitlin Ryan that demonstrates a link between family acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) children and their overall health and well-being is the focus of a Dec. 11 article in The Salt Lake Tribune. The findings show a correlation between negative reactions and rejection during adolescence and attempted suicide in adolescence and adulthood.
