Spring 2003 academic calendar clarification
The academic calendar printed in the SFSU Bulletin has incorrect information for the spring 2003 semester. Faculty department meetings will be held Thursday, Jan. 23 -- not Jan. 24 -- and advising for late admits will be held Friday, Jan. 24.
CampusMemo approaches the holidays
The last CampusMemo issue of the semester will be published next Monday, Dec. 16. All items for that issue must be submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday. The first issue of the spring semester will come out Monday, Jan. 27, 2003. As always, items for that issue should be submitted by 5 p.m. of the Tuesday before publication, Jan. 21.
For late December or early January events, submit items to the Web Calendar at: www.sfsu.edu/calendar.
Each year, four California State University faculty members and one administrator are selected to receive one of the CSU's Wang Family Excellence Awards, which carry a $20,000 gift to each recipient. All members of the campus community are invited to submit nominations for the upcoming Wang Awards. The awards honor faculty who "through extraordinary commitment and dedication have distinguished themselves by exemplary contributions and achievements in their academic disciplines and are having a discernable effect on students." The administrator will be selected "for extraordinary accomplishments" in her or his university assignment. In 1998, the first year of the program, San Francisco State astronomer Geoff Marcy was a Wang Award recipient.
Each CSU president may nominate one faculty member in each of four areas: Visual and Performing Arts and Letters; National Sciences, Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and Engineering; Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Services; and Education and Professional and Applied Sciences Fields, as well as one administrator. A CSU selection committee determines the winners, and their decisions are ratified by the Board of Trustees.
According to the CSU call for nominations, selection committee members are seeking faculty "superstars" who are making "multi-faceted contributions to the learning community, for example, involving students in their research, arranging and supervising students internships, engaging in community service, recruiting students, publishing." Successful administrative nominees "should go well beyond what is expected" in their performance.
Nominations to the president would be appreciated by the holiday break but can be submitted through Jan. 18. They should be sent to the President's Office, Attn: Wang Awards, or e-mailed to president@sfsu.edu and should include a statement outlining the nominee's qualifications for the award.
For details, contact Sheila McClear at ext. 8-7107 or smcclear@sfsu.edu.
Charitable campaign ends Friday
Friday is the deadline to turn in pledge forms for the California State Employees Charitable Campaign (CSECC). Drop forms off at Human Resources, ADM 252, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. or Public Affairs, Lakeview Center 110, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
For many of us, the question is not whether to give to charity, but the best way to give. The CSECC and United Way is a great option. Here's why:
- Economies of scale: Without CSECC and similar groups raising funds, all of the many charities would have to do their own fund-raising, which would increase their overhead. More than 86 cents of every dollar raised by CSECC goes to the charity of your choice.
- Flexibility: Few organizations allow you to contribute a set amount that is divided up between different groups. With CSECC, you can make a one-time or ongoing contribution that supports the various groups that you choose.
- Choices: You can donate to any of the thousands of nonprofit groups, which means it is easy for you to support your favorite cause.
- It's easy: Whether you want to make a one-time donation or have a little bit taken out of each check, all you have to do is fill out the pledge form and send it in.
- A little is a lot: Sometimes it's hard to make ends meet, let alone give $24, $120 or more to charity. With automatic payroll deduction, it's easy and painless. Just $2 per month adds up to $24 per year, $5 per month adds up to $60 per year, and $10 per month adds up to $120 in a year.
- Recognition: Give $500 or more in a year (only $42 per month) and receive a stuffed golden bear. Give $1000 or more and receive a Chairman's Circle statue with your own inscription. In addition to these gifts, your name will be listed in the next campaign brochure (unless you wish to remain anonymous).

Campus departments are reminded that all decorative trees or greens need to be fireproofed and should be removed from buildings before the campus closure Sunday, Dec. 22.
Decorative cuttings from campus trees have been fireproofed and are available at the Campus Paint Shop in the Corporation Yard beginning 7 a.m. Thursday. Trees can be brought to the Paint Shop before noon for fireproofing and picked up the next morning. The Paint Shop is open for tree drop-off and pickup from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Greens will be outside the shop and can be picked up anytime.
The Corporation Yard is located next to the Lakeview Center, adjacent to Lot 20.
The College of Nursing is still collecting gifts to bring some Christmas joy to the two daughters of nursing student Rose Soberanis, who died unexpectedly Nov. 6. Bring new, unwrapped gifts to the School of Nursing office, BH 371, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.
Toys, books, clothing or gift certificates appropriate for a 10 year old and 3 year old are requested. Cash donations are also welcome.
Departments or groups that would like to coordinate a collective gift should contact Linda Leonard for gift suggestions at ext. 8-6850 or lleonard@sfsu.edu.

Official welcome for Welcome Mosaic
The campus community is invited to the dedication ceremony of the "Welcome Mosaic" at 11 a.m. today in the lobby of the Student Services building.
The lobby decoration and the mosaic are the creations of students in Kenneth Fehrman's Consumer Family Studies class.
