SF State Magazine: Add it to your summer reading list

June 28, 2011 -- The spring/summer issue of the University magazine is now online.

Get ready for a close-up with SF State alumna Lisa Cholodenko, the screenwriter and director behind the "The Kids Are All Right." In the new issue of SF State Magazine, now online, she discusses her five-year odyssey to create the film, which stars yet another talented Gator, Annette Bening. Both grads helped make 2011 the 12th consecutive year SF State alumni have been nominated for Hollywood's highest honor.

Other cinema success stories include a profile of esteemed film historian Joseph McBride. Find out what movies he thinks you must see and enjoy an online preview of Hart Perez's new documentary, "Behind the Curtain: Joseph McBride on Writing Film History."

Other previews in the new issue include a look at the plans for The Mashouf Performing Arts Center, complete with the inside scoop on its design from critically acclaimed architect Michael Maltzan, and a look at Dana Carvey's comeback (Garth and the Church Lady are coming along for the ride too).

If the lousy economy or rising cost of gas is keeping you close to home this summer, live vicariously through travel writer David Farley, the latest contributor to "Notes from the Road." He tells readers about his search for Hemingway's ghost in Madrid and reveals "the bubble-bursting secret: that travel writing is almost as over-romanticized as Italy."

There is plenty of news to engage the left-side of your brain as well. Read "10 Questions" to get current on San Francisco Bay currents with Toby Garfield, director of SF State's Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies. Follow Frank Cipriano and his suitcase-sized lab across the globe in search of the truth about whaling. Meet the alum who helped give us one of the most important inventions of the 20th century (hint: it is powering the device you are reading this article on right now).

Have a story of your own to share? SF State Magazine is looking for brief descriptions of challenges overcome thanks to an SF State student, professor or alum. And as always, we welcome letters to the editor.
