Guardian scholars featured on NBC Nightly News
March 28 , 2011 -- Student Rosanna Fajardo, alum Sokhom Mao and Assistant Professor of Social Work Sonja Lenz-Rashid are featured in an NBC Nightly News story about the Guardian Scholars program, which helps former foster youth earn college diplomas.

The news story, which was reported by NBC Correspondent Miguel Almaguer (B.A. '00, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts), emphasized that only five to 10 percent of foster youth make it to college and of these, less than three percent graduate.
The SF State Guardian Scholars program, founded by Lenz-Rashid and the program's director, Xochitl Sanchez-Zarama, provides students with year-round guaranteed on-campus housing, renewable scholarship opportunities, faculty mentorship, counseling with a program case manager, financial aid packages, job and internship opportunities and other support.
Mao, who graduated in 2009 and is pursuing a public service career, said that if it hadn't been for the program, he might have dropped out of college.
