SEO Office's work featured on CBS Sunday Morning

Feb. 16, 2011 -- Professor of Biology Frank Bayliss and the Student Enrichment Opportunities (SEO) Office were featured in a nationally broadcast piece on CBS Sunday Morning on Jan. 30.

The piece, titled "America's Brain Drain," examined the increasing trend of foreign students coming to the United States to complete doctorates in math and science, and then returning to their home country after graduation.

Bayliss' work at SF State was cited as a solution to finding new streams of science talent in the U.S. The SEO Office provides students with funding so they can focus on academics and research instead of working part-time jobs. The program has been a success, sending hundreds of low income and underrepresented minority students on to doctoral programs in math and science since the 1990s.

Bayliss was honored at the White House in January 2010 with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring for his work.
