Business Ethics Week prepares agents of change

Oct. 26, 2011 -- The College of Business will celebrate Business Ethics Week Oct. 31 – Nov. 4, putting the focus on business ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainable business.

Now in its sixth consecutive year, Business Ethics Week is a time when faculty from every discipline within the College of Business incorporate business ethics into special events and classroom activities.

"We're teaching students how businesses can be agents of ethical, social and environmental change in society and we are equipping students to be part of that change," said Assistant Professor of Management Denise Kleinrichert, who spearheaded the planning for the week.

During the week there will be six special events where students can hear industry leaders speak about such topics as social entrepreneurship, shareholder activism, corporate social responsibility and the impact of supply chains on the environment.

Speakers will include entrepreneurs such as Gary Barker, founder and CEO of the product design firm that brought us clothing hangers manufactured from 100 percent recycled paper, and Paul Tasner, who recently co-founded a startup to convert waste paper into protective packaging.

More than 50 faculty will incorporate documentaries, discussions and case studies about business ethics into approximately 70 classes during the week, covering such topics as the European Union and the financial crisis, and fair labor issues in global supply chains.

Business Ethics Week continues the College of Business' longstanding commitment to teaching socially and environmentally sustainable business practices. The College requires all students to take a business ethics course before graduating and is the only College of Business in the CSU to offer an MBA emphasis in sustainable business. The College's MBA program was ranked 13th in the U.S. and 16th in the world by the Aspen Institute's 2011-12 Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey, which measures how well schools teach students about the social and environmental impact of business. Last year, the College established the Center for Ethical and Sustainable Business to provide a hub for sustainability research, teaching and outreach.
