Students donate and recycle during move-out

June 12, 2009 -- During this year's Sustainable Move Out, students donated more than 51,000 pounds of clothing and household items to Goodwill, a 62 percent increase from last year, and gave 642 pounds of non-perishable food to the San Francisco Food Bank. SF State's Sustainable Move Out program encourages students vacating their dorms to donate or recycle unwanted items, helping divert material from landfill.

"This increase in donations represents a collaboration among multiple groups, on and off campus, working to make sustainability a part of every student's move out experience," said Caitlin Steele, SF State's Sustainability Coordinator. "We tried to make it as easy as possible for students to donate."

Throughout May, students were able to donate at drop boxes in residence halls, and Goodwill distributed reusable bags and boxes to help students transport their unwanted items. Goodwill's donation truck was on campus during finals week and volunteers from Goodwill, AmeriCorps and San Francisco Department of the Environment were on hand to assist students with their donations.
