Gnathian Skyphos

Gnathian Skyphos, inv. s. 51
Southern Italian (Apulia). 4th BC
Fine terracotta. H. 8.5 cm. W 8 cm. W. 14 cm. (with handles)
Painted first with a black glaze, then overpainted with additional colors, this decorative technique is the distinguishing characteristic of Gnathian ware. An inverted wave pattern is added in white under the rim while grape clusters delicately hang from a thin yellow line. The reverse side is adorned by tiny white grape clusters below the rim. This highly skilled artisan is neat and precise and could have been influenced by the Rose Painter.
