Marjorie Hefter Stern Scholarship
Application forms for two $1000.00 Marjorie Hefter Stern Scholarships, one for undergraduates, one for graduates, are available in the offices of the Dean of the College of Humanities (HUM 484) and from the Women Studies Program (HUM 315). All applications must be turned in to the Women Studies Department Office by the posted deadline.
Qualifications:
The Scholarship will be given to San Francisco State University students majoring in any subject, but preference at the undergraduate level will be given to students majoring in Women Studies, Labor Studies, or other programs examining social change. The donor is especially interested in encouraging women to continue their education.
1. Promise of contributions to social change.
By "social change" the donor means institutional change or change in the relationship between the individual and society. Its goals include the freeing of women from the social expectations that keep them, as Virginia Woolf put it, "mute and maternal, poor and powerless." Equal opportunity for higher education can give women a chance to effect such social change, i.e., to challenge the laws, the attitudes, and the values that have for so long guaranteed women's inferior status. Applicants should have some record of involvement in social change and should show promise that they will continue to work for such change in their community.
2. Financial need. The award is intended to provide extra funds (e.g. for childcare, rising rents, etc.) that will make a significant difference in a student's life. Applicants should be able to explain and demonstrate how the award will enable them to remain in school.
3. GPA of B or above in the prior academic year.
Undergraduate applicants must be first-semester juniors through first-semester seniors.
Graduate applicants may apply at any time after acceptance into an approved graduate major at SFSU and prior to their final semester.
