The Department of Comparative and World Literature at San Francisco State University invites applications for an approved tenure-track Assistant Professor position, to begin in Fall 2009. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Comparative Literature or a comparable discipline; candidates must, at a minimum, have completed all doctoral requirements by August 1, 2009. Areas of Specialization, Teaching Range, and Responsibilities: Candidates must have demonstrable scholarly strength in more than one national language and literature, with competence in critical theory. Specific area of specialization is less important than strong comparatist training and evidence of excellence in teaching. Preferred areas: African or Asian literatures, pre-twentieth century literature, and/or the genres of drama or poetry. (We are unlikely to consider applicants with specialties in literature of the Americas; medieval literature; or post-1700 British, French, or German narrative.) Teaching responsibilities range from large General Education world literature courses to upper-division undergraduate courses and M.A. seminars. The normal teaching load is three courses per semester, although there are opportunities for support of scholarly projects. Other responsibilities include supervising master’s theses, advising, curricular development, and departmental service. Rank and Salary: Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary competitive, commensurate with qualifications.
