I am delighted to join with President Robert Corrigan and San Francisco State University to establish the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Leadership Center at SF State. This represents another "first" in my career and in the celebrated history of SF State: there isn’t a center like this anywhere else that I know of -- with its focus on local and regional governance and leadership.
The greatest impact we all can have on the political scene is at the local level. At the center, we're going to mentor and train our students not just in political theory, but in practical experience. We're going to give them jobs in government through our student intern program, and expose them to the best and brightest by bringing political leaders, media analysts and other commentators to the Brown Center to discuss and debate the issues of the day.
Just as Harvard is known for its Kennedy School, I have great hopes that SF State will over time become known for the Brown Center.
SF State played a pivotal role in helping to prepare me for a career in public service. I was admitted to SF State on a "trial basis," and graduated in 1955 with a degree in political science, before going on to Hastings for my law degree. But my heart and soul have never left SF State. My years on campus catapulted me from the narrow world of Mineola, Texas, to the broad, inclusive, intellectually challenging world of a world-class university, in a world-class city. Once here, I was never the same: doors were opened, relationships established, confidence gained.
The mentors, friends and professors I met at SF State had a profound effect on my life, my
views, my opportunities and my career. I am delighted to help prepare,
inspire and train the "next generation of Willie Brown's,"
who also will leave here prepared to take on the world -- and make a difference
-- through distinguished careers in public service.
