Marthese's Voice

How have increased tuition fees impacted you and your family?:
The higher the fees are increased at the university, the less my family and I are able to get by. My husband made the decision to work full time and quit his trade schooling so that I can finish earning my bachelors degree. It was the only way for us to be able to survive paying for school. It is going to be even worse for us if there is yet another fee increase and I get accepted to my desired grad school program. It is going to be worth it in the end because I will have the education to get a good job and live a decent life outside of the poverty that I have been living in for years. It is sad that we must go into debt so badly just to get a good education. And it is only getting worse.

What are you studying at SF State and what do you hope to do once you graduate?:
I am studying sociology at SFSU and I hope to go on to a sociology graduate program. With a masters degree in sociology, I hope to be able to teach at a community college level and work in the field of research. I want to use my education to help others get themselves out of poverty and create better neighborhoods for younger children that are in grade school. I would like to do this by participating in research with an aim to change public policy for low income and impoverished neighborhoods such as mine.
