Campus Escorts
The CARE Program
Recent
surveys indicate that campus communities nation-wide
are becoming increasingly concerned over issues involving
personal safety in the university environment. San Francisco
State University shares this concern and accepts its
responsibility to develop and implement programs designed
to ensure that its students, faculty, and staff enjoy
their years at San Francisco State as free as possible
from threats to their personal safety or well-being.
One such program is the San Francisco State Campus Alliance for a Risk-free Environment. C.A.R.E. is a student security team employed, trained, and supervised by your University Police Department.
Hours Available
Your C.A.R.E. Team members are available
to serve you from sunset to midnight seven days a week.
Regular University Police Officers will be available for
escort service when C.A.R.E. members are not on duty.
To arrange for your escort CALL 338-7200 and tell the
dispatcher where you would prefer to be met. Please allow
10 to 15 minutes for C.A.R.E. to arrive.
Screening
Students applying for membership on the C.A.R.E. Team
are accepted only after successful fingerprint screening
and a thorough background check.
Training
All new C.A.R.E. Team members will be required to attend
sensitivity and diversity orientation sessions, Sexual
Assault reporting, and general Crime Prevention training
modules presented by the University Police Department.
DPRC also provides training to all C.A.R.E. team members.
Supervision
C.A.R.E. Team members work under the direct supervision
of the on-duty Patrol Sergeant or Watch Commander of the
University Police Department.
Identification
C.A.R.E. Team members serving our community can be readily
identified by their distinctive attire. While on duty,
each member will be wearing a red polo shirt with University
Police Department in white on the front, and C.A.R.E.
written in large white letters down the back. Members
may also wear a red jacket with C.A.R.E. written down
the back in large white letters. All team members will
be equipped with a two-way radio for direct contact with
the University Police Department Dispatch Center and will
carry flashlights for lighting assistance where required.
Services Provided
While C.A.R.E. Team members will be trained to offer a
wide variety of services to the university community,
their primary responsibility will be to provide personal
escorts and additional building security during evening
and night time hours. Team members will be available to
escort you to and from your classroom, laboratory or office,
to your car, or to your campus apartment. While most escorts
are provided by walking, an electric cart escort is available
under special circumstances.
