Regional Scholarship

Technical Communication Scholarships Available Academic Year 2008-2009

Dr. Kenneth M. Gordon Memorial Scholarship
Sponsored by the Northern California Chapters of the Society for Technical Communication

Awards
Dr. Kenneth M. Gordon Memorial Scholarship recipients receive cash awards ranging from $500-$1000 each. They are also eligible for a complimentary student membership in the Society for Technical Communication (STC).

Sponsorship
The Gordon Scholarship is sponsored by the Northern California chapters of STC. More information about STC may be found at http://www.stc.org.

Eligibility
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a certificate or degree program in technical communication, and
* have at least three technical communication courses completed or in progress.
* have at least one of those courses completed by the time of application.
* will be continuing their technical communication studies in the fall 2008.

For a technical communication program to qualify, it must:
* be at an accredited college or university in Northern California
* emphasize an area of study directly related to professional work in technical communication

Evaluation
* Recipients must demonstrate potential for success as professional technical communicators.
* Recipients will be selected from among the applicants by a committee of experienced technical communicators.

The committee considers all required application materials.
The committee does not consider financial need.

* Completed application form
* Official transcripts and descriptions for technical communication courses
* One or more letters of recommendation
* Three samples of technical communication work
* Personal statement

All application materials must be postmarked no later than 30 June 2008.

Required attachments:
* Personal statement (one or two pages) describing your achievements and career goals in the area of technical communication.
* Official transcript showing the technical communication courses listed on page one of this application.

Please note:
You may ask your college to forward a transcript to the address below. However, if it arrives postmarked late, the committee will not consider your application.

Alternatively, you can obtain a transcript from your college and include the sealed college envelope with this application.

The committee does not consider unofficial transcripts.
For courses in progress, obtain an enrollment verification form and include that.

* Program brochure or copies of college catalog pages describing the technical communication courses listed, with listed courses highlighted.

* One or more letters of recommendation, each from someone who can help the committee evaluate your potential for success as a professional technical communicator.

* Three samples of your technical communication work, each with a brief attachment describing the purpose and intended audience for the piece and your contribution in its development and/or production.

Please note:
The scholarship committee will not return materials.

If you provide samples on electronic media, please also provide:
* Printed instructions for use (including platform and application information)
* Printed excerpts of representative elements
(for example: screen shots of a multimedia piece or a photo storyboard for a video)
