FAQ'S about Internships and other Advanced Coursework

Q: Are there multimedia courses I can take that will count toward my degree? A: Yes. Several are listed as electives for the TPW program. You may also be able to substitute other academic multimedia courses. Courses taken at SFSU's downtown multimedia center, however, do not earn academic units and so cannot apply.

Q: Do you offer computer training? A: Yes, as an aspect of some courses. Programs currently being used in TPW courses include FrameMaker, InDesign, PowerPoint, FrontPage, and RoboHelp. Skills elective courses also cover other popular programs. Of course, all courses also require word processing.

Q: What kind of project is required for TPW 698 (Supervised Writing Project)? A: Approximately 120 hours of work on a major independent, original projectincluding research, writing, designing, editing, and desktop publishing. Contact the Program Office to request a syllabus.

Q: Can my TPW 698 writing project be created for my current job? A: Possibly, if it otherwise fits the course requirements. Discuss this option with your instructor.

Q: When should I try to find an internship? A: Once you have met the prerequisites for the internship and usually at least a few weeks before you want to begin work. Be sure to have your resume and portfolio ready in advance.

Q: How do I find an internship? A: You can begin by looking at the internship listing book in the TPW Program office. You also can consult listings in the Career Center and the Community Involvement Center. In addition, it's a good idea to build networking contacts who may know of internship opportunities. Ask to be added to our "jobseeker" email distribution list for students and recent grads. See the Internship Guidelines for more information.

Q: Could my current job count as my internship? A: Possibly, if your supervisor can separate and evaluate your qualifying editing and writing work from your other duties. However, it may look better on your resume if you can increase your skills and experience with an internship in the field that you hope to enter after graduation. See the Internships Overview for more information.

Q: Can I take an internship as a non-major? A: Yes, if you meet the internship prerequisites and get approval from the TPW Director.
