Get Involved
SF State students have a long history of involvement in the sustainability movement. From starting the Recycling Resource Center in the 1980’s to the current composting program at the Student Centerand to the formation of the ECO Student Group in 2002, Gators are leading the way.
Opportunities for Involvement
ECO Students
ECO Students is an environmental action student group. It is open to all students from any major. The group works on a variety of environmental issues on and off campus. Please email sfsuecostudents@gmail.com for more information.
Bicycle Working Group
SF State has established the Bicycle Working Group (BWG), a committee of students, faculty, staff and administrators to discuss ways of encouraging bicycling to campus. The BWG has installed new bike racks on campus and completed a bike path that connects the campus to University Park North Housing and to the city of San Francisco’s bike routes. Community members interested in joining the Working Group should contact transport@sfsu.edu.
Friends of the Greenhouse (FOTGH)
FOTGH is a student organization that sponsors horticultural and botanical activities for students of any major, as well as staff, and local community members. There is always work to be done to keep the 2,000 plus plants happy and healthy. FOTGH also has a plant sale of greenhouse overstock once a semester. Please contact fotgh@sfsu.edu for more information.

Student Initiatives
Composting
In April 2009, after a three year campaign spearheaded by ECO Students, compost was introduced to the Cesar Chavez Student Center's community in an effort to bring compost education to the forefront of SF State’s waste management policy. Prior to this composting was only collected behind the scenes, from the Student Center's vendors. With this implementation of compost in the Student Center, SF State is well on its way to achieving its goal of zero waste by 2020.
Fair Trade Coffee and Tea
In fall 2006, students from ENVS 600 campaigned to bring Fair Trade and Organic coffees to campus. Organic and Fair Trade coffee is now available throughout Campus.
The Sustainable and Environmental Equity Development (SEED) Fund
In spring 2008, several students developed a hypothetical SEED Fund initiative based on The Green Initiative Fund passed on several UC campuses. Revenues for the fund would be raised by an additional $4 student fee, which would go towards sustainability and social justice oriented projects. After the class ended, ECO Student took over the project and is currently collecting signatures of support for the fee which will be put to student referendum in the 2010-2011 school year.
For New Students
The Green Guide is a great quick resource of sustainable activities, programs, events and actions for SF State students.
