Segment III

Segment III: Relationships of Knowledge
Information for Students

  Student Introduction   Before Application
Before Departure   While Abroad   After Return
Congratulations on your acceptance! Now that your dream is becoming a reality, it is time to do some serious planning. You will want to have a solid plan for your courses before you leave, even though your plans may change when you arrive.

You will have some forms to fill out at this stage. The forms are different for CSU programs and bilateral programs, so please pay attention to the deadlines for your particular program.

Course Approval Forms

You need to meet with an advisor in Academic Advising (Administration 211) to fill out your forms and have them signed. These same forms may also have information to be signed by your major or minor advisor, but Academic Advising does the signing for Segment III courses.

Again, you will need to choose three upper-division classes to take while abroad, one from category A, one from category B, and a third from either category A or B:

A. Perspectives of the social sciences: Courses focused centrally on the student's host country from the disciplinary perspectives of anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, or sociology.

B. Perspectives of the humanities and creative arts: Courses focused centrally on the student's host country from the disciplinary perspectives of cultural anthropology, history, history and criticism of the arts, literature (either in English or in the language of the host country), philosophy, or religious studies.

Courses that combine the approach of two or more disciplines are appropriate, as are ethnic studies courses. At least one course must focus centrally on issues of cultural, ethnic, or social diversity.

Why do these forms now?

It is very important to get these forms signed, because it is a contract between you and the university. We are saying that IF you take these courses, you WILL receive credit for Segment III.

Don't worry if you get to your host country and the courses on the forms aren't offered or if you change your mind about what you want to take. If there are any changes in your registration from the courses on the signed forms, please send an E-mail to the advisor who signed your forms to ask whether the new courses could count. When you receive a response, please print and keep the E-mail for your records.
