Frequently Asked QuestionsHow long is the paper?
The length depends on how much the student has been asked to write in the courses that the student took in the host country. It should be at least ten pages, but the total amount of writing for all the Segment III classes needs to be thirty pages. If the student has not written twenty pages of work in her or his other classes, the AU 694 paper should be longer.
What is the paper supposed to be about?
It really can be about anything that you and the student think is appropriate, as long as both classroom learning and lived experience is a part of it. You will be the one grading the paper, so what it's about is up to you.
What should the paper look like?
This is also mostly up to you. We do ask that it be a formal, analytical paper, and not a memoir or creative work. But beyond that, the decision is yours.
How much reading do I need to assign?
You do not need to assign any additional reading.
How often do we need to meet?
That is also up to you. It is a good idea to have at least a few meetings, perhaps during office hours, during the semester. We have had students completely forget about AU 694 until the last week otherwise. But you should not feel that you need to have regular meetings, unless you wish it.
When is the paper due?
The grades need to be E-mailed to the Cluster Coordinator by the last day of class. Please give the students an early enough deadline to allow you to submit the grade by that time.
What sort of compensation is available?
The Cluster Coordinator will be more than happy to provide you with a letter for your WPAF for tenure or post-tenure review, thanking you for participating in the cluster and in the internationalization of the curriculum. This new GE cluster is one of the measurable ways that SFSU faculty can prove advancement toward CUSP Goal 4, support for internationalization. The success of the program not only enhances the experiences of the students, but also enables the progress of the university toward its goals.
