Office of International Programs (OIP)

An overview of the CSU International Programs

CSU IP is an integral part of the CSU system

The International Programs (IP) was established by the CSU Board of Trustees in 1963 as the official study abroad program of the California State University system, available to ANY student at a CSU campus. San Francisco State University is one of 23 campuses in the CSU system.

IP offers a true international experience

IP's guiding principle is that students should be "immersed" in the academic and living environments in their host countries. Students live in the communities where their studies are pursued. Learning the language of the host culture to achieve maximum social integration is always a high priority for IP students. This is an integral part of their year-long programs.

IP takes student needs into account

IP students are provided special assistance in preparing for their year of study and while they are overseas by professional CSU and/or host university staff. This assistance includes, for example, help in obtaining visas, arranging for transportation and housing, health insurance, and academic advising.

International Programs offer these special features:

  • No overseas tuition or administrative costs are charged; students pay CSU IP tuition, which is about the same as SF State tuition.
  • Students are enrolled for a full academic year at a host university and earn resident credit for their coursework.
  • All campus financial aid is applicable overseas.
  • On site assistance is provided by CSU Resident Directors and/or CSU staff or host university administrators.
