Structured
First Year Experience
Student Support Services (SSS) offers an orientation for new SSS
students entering San Francisco State University (SFSU) during the
fall semesters. The orientation explains the basic services and
policies of SSS while introducing the new students to SSS staff.
New SSS students are expected attend advising and tutorial
bi-weekly, complete four workshops for the year and learn/maintain
practices conducive to successful academic progress.
Academic and
Career Counseling/Advising
SSS provides ancillary academic and career counseling/advising. We
work closely with departmental advisors, deans and career and
placement staffs to ensure that SSS students understand the many
options available and the requirements that must be met. Advanced
Standing Evaluations (ASEs), Degree audit reports (DARS), ASSIST,
interest inventories, and career exploration and advanced counseling
techniques are utilized. SSS students are expected to meet with a
SSS advisor to complete an individualized learning plan (ILP) which
can help structure their academic and career goals.
Because all of
our SSS advisors have graduate backgrounds in Counseling, they
employ holistic techniques designed to address the needs of the
whole student. Thus, SSS students can feel comfortable sharing
their academic, career or personal concerns with their advisors to
work on solutions to their problems.
Academic
Tutorial Support
SSS students have access to high quality, drop in tutorial which may
be one-on-one or small group. Students who have successfully
completed the courses and are often former SSS participants lead
these regularly scheduled study sessions. Through these experiences
students become successful independent learners by utilizing the
transferable study skills they have acquired.
Computer Labs
SSS offers two
state of the art computer labs with twelve Pentium 4 computers for
SSS students to complete homework, conduct research, surf the
Internet, and check email.
Office
Equipment
SSS students
have access to free use of the office laser printer to print
homework as well as limited use of the office copier, phones and
fax.
Priority
Registration
SSS students
have early, priority registration to classes which helps ensure that
SSS participants are able to register for the classes and professors
they desire to help them graduate in a timely manner.
SSS Grant Aid
Occasionally,
SSS gives an SSS grant to eligible SSS participants depending on
fiscal availability. The amount of the award depends on how much
money is available and only will be given to those most in need.
Assistance with Other SFSU Departments
SSS can provide some assistance with the admissions, remediation,
financial aid, housing, and other application processes at the SFSU.
We also serve as an advocate and assist students with personal
matters.
Graduate and Professional School Advising
We encourage our students to pursue graduate and professional
degrees and SSS advisors are also available to advise students on a
one-on-one basis. Further, SSS advisors and staff can also provide
first hand experience as all are either current or graduated Masters
degree students.
SSS Workshops
SSS provides
several workshops each year tailored to the first time freshman
student. Topics will vary and can include: remediation,
career exploration, time management, study skills,
note-taking/test-taking, and other topics that can be suggested by
students. SSS will also have departments and colleges provide
inservice workshops to SSS students on thier resources and majors.
Cultural and
Social Activities
SSS strives to build a learning community where our students from
diverse backgrounds have opportunities to enjoy the diversity of the
SFSU and Bay Area community. To this end, on occasion, we provide
free social and cultural activities during the year for students to
meet their SSS peers, faculty, and staff.
Informational Resource
SSS provides a wide variety of information on topics such as
scholarships, awards, grants, volunteer placements, and other
opportunities to get involved at SFSU and the surrounding Bay Area
community through regular email updates.
