Preliminary Education Specialist Credentials

Preliminary Education Specialist Credential programs include requirements in a general education component, common core requirements, plus specialization coursework. These specialist credentials meet state standards for special education teachers. The Preliminary Education Specialist credential allows graduates to teach in their area of specialization for a period of five years.

Preliminary Education Specialist Credentials are offered with emphasis in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood Special Education: (birth to pre-K only): children eligible for early intervention, special education, and/or related services under federal law.
  • Mild/Moderate Disabilities: (K-12, including adults): learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, other health impaired, and emotional disturbance.
  • Moderate/Severe Disabilities: (K-12, including adults): autism, cognitive impairment, deaf-blindness, emotional disturbance, and multiple disabilities.
  • Visual Impairments: (0-22): blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind.

Curriculum leading to Preliminary Education Specialist Credentials and Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credentials meet state licensing requirements of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
