Lower Division Coursework

First-year courses in Spanish are designed for students who have had no previous formal training in Spanish and are not native speakers. Those students who have spoken Spanish at home but have not had any formal training should, in general, choose courses no lower than Spanish 205 or 216.

Spanish 101 and 102 (five units each) emphasize the four basic language skills, understanding, speaking, reading, and writing.

At the next level, students may choose between two routes of study, one emphasizing writing and grammatical skills (Spanish 205) and the other designed for improving conversation and reading skills (Spanish 206 and 216). All courses are three units each. Students may choose courses stressing particular skills they wish to improve. They are encouraged to enroll in conversation and grammar courses at the same time in order to develop a well-rounded program.

Spanish 205: Grammar Review
For students who initiated their studies elsewhere, continuing students who need further training in basic skills, or students who have been away from Spanish studies for a period of time.

Spanish 206: Conversation
For students who, after Spanish 102, wish to enhance their oral skills in everyday subject material.

Spanish 216: Intermediate Conversation & Reading
For continuing students and native speakers to enhance their oral skills in more technical areas. This course is a prerequisite for upper-division Spanish 306, Advanced Reading and Conversation.
