Hepatitis B Free Screening

Last year on March 3 - 7, 2008, we launched California Pacific Medical Center’s (CPMC) Hepatitis B Free Screening Campaign at the Student Health Service and screened over 791 SFSU students and vaccinated over 150 students. We are back this spring 2009 semester again to educate, test, and vaccinate all Asian and Pacific Islanders for Hepatitis B.

For those of you who did not have the opportunity to join us last spring, come out and take advantage of this FREE screening & vaccination service sponsored by CPMC.

Screenings will be from February 9-13, 2009 from 10:00 am – 4:00pm. After the screening, your results will be available to pick up on March 16-17, 2009 at the Student Health Service during our vaccination dates.

For those who participated last spring and did not complete their vaccination series are welcome to come back during our vaccination dates to get them too.

B Informed - Why should you get screened?

  1. Hepatitis B is more common than HIV and 50-100 times more infectious than HIV.
  2. Hepatitis B is the most common serious liver infection in all communities.
  3. 1 in 10 Asian and Pacific Islanders have chronic (life-long) hepatitis B.
  4. Most do not even know they are infected.
  5. 1 in 4 people with chronic hepatitis B will die from liver cancer or liver failure.
  6. If you or your parents were born in another country other than the U.S., you should get tested because you have a greater risk for Hepatitis B.
  7. If you were infected at birth you will carry the virus for life, even if you were vaccinated.
  8. Vaccinations do NOT help individuals infected with Hepatitis B, but treatment does.

B Tested- What you should do!

  1. Get tested
  • If non immune, get vaccinated.
  • If infected, get appropriate medical monitoring, and effective treatment.

B Vaccinated - Why is it important to promote Hepatitis B awareness and testing?

  1. Educate yourself, your family & friends.
  2. Help indentify the 1 in 10 API Americans who are infected.
  3. Help identify and vaccinate those who are unprotected.
  4. Help those with chronic Hepatitis B get appropriate medical monitoring and effective treatment.

You mustbe screened during our FREE Screening week (February 9-13, 2009) in order to get the free 3-dose vaccinations at SF State. (Save $177)

Please inform this information on Hepatitis B to all your family & friends and join us during our week of free screenings & designated dates for the vaccinations in March, April & September!

Hepatitis B FREE Screening Campaign 2008

We launched California Pacific Medical Center’s (CPMC) Hepatitis B Free Screening Campaign at the Student Health Services on March 3 - 7, 2008. In close partnership with CPMC, the Student Health Services (SHS) were thrilled to have offered freeHepatitis B screenings and vaccinations to unprotected SFSU students. This event would not have been possible without the assistance of over 50 volunteers who joined the Hep B Free Campaign to help educate, screen and followup on the Asian Pacific Islander community of SFSU. Among these volunteers are undergraduates (PEACHes, CEASE, SAFE Place, and Alpha Phi Omega) and nursing students who all worked hard to make a difference in the community.

The results of the Hep Screening March 3 - 7, 2008 are as follows:

  • Total students screened: 791
  • Immune: 60%
  • Unprotected: 37.5 %
  • Chronically Infected: 2.4 %

If you haven't been screened yet, click here for other screening locations in San Francisco.
