Meningitis Vaccine

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that all college freshmen living in dormitories receive a newly licensed meningococcal vaccine (Menactra vaccine). For more information click on ACIP web site.

Every Fall semester, the health center in association with SFSU University Housing offers a mass immunization day for meningitis to freshmen living in one of the residence halls. This usually happens during one of the Moving Days.

However, we recommend that you consider vaccination against meningococcal disease and chickenpox (if not previously immunized or if you have not had the disease) prior to arriving on campus. Please contact your primary care provider to make the appropriate arrangements.

The Student Health Service does not carry every vaccine because of its high cost, However, we can order the vaccine if a SHS physician prescribes the vaccine for you.
