Women's Services

The SHS Women's Services program is available to all eligible SFSU women students. Our physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and support staff are trained in the provision of gynecological care including routine gynecological examinations and concerns, detection and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and information and education on sexuality, birth control and menopause.

Appointments
You can schedule an appointment in person or call (415) 338-1251. If you cannot make your appointment, please call (415) 338-1251 to cancel prior to your appointment, otherwise you will be charged $20. no show fee. Please schedule your annual gynecological exam when you are not menstruating. Forty-eight (48) hours before your exam, please do not douche, have sexual intercourse or use any vaginal medications, creams, jellies, foams, suppositories, films, or tampons. An emergency birth control refill can be prescribed if you will run out of your birth control method before you can be scheduled for an appointment.

Listed below are examples of the services that can be covered in your appointment:
Gynecologic annual examination:

  • Breast examination
  • General health screening
  • Pelvic examination
  • Pap smear ($)
  • STD check is desired (lab charges apply for certain STI's screening tests)

Current gynecologic concerns:

  • Vaginal infections
  • Menstrual irregularities/cramps
  • Menopause and pre-menopause care and concerns
  • Breast problems
  • STD symptoms
  • Pre-conception counseling
  • Abnormal pap smears
  • Sexuality, birth control and pregnancy consultation (we welcome women and their partners to Women's Services to discuss any topics related to sexual or reproductive health.)

Sexuality issues

  • Contraceptive methods
  • Concerns, questions, and counseling
  • Safer sex information
  • Medical care for sexual assault

Pregnancy issues

  • Urine pregnancy test ($)
  • Blood pregnancy test (there is a charge)
  • Emergency contraception (Morning After Pill) - can be given up to 120 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • Referrals for prenatal care
  • Referrals for pregnancy termination

The Emergency Contraception hotline, 1-888-not2late (1-888-668-25283), provides the names and phone numbers of 5 clinics near you that offer emergency contraception. Some pharmacies also provide emergency contraception without a doctor's prescription.
