Pharmacy FAQ
Do you accept prescriptions from an outside physician?
We are able to fill prescriptions from doctors outside of the Student Health Center only if we carry the medication. First, call (415) 338-1710 to check if medication is available at the pharmacy. Your health care provider can:
- Fax a prescription to (415) 338-3976
- Give you a written prescription
- Phone a prescription to (415) 338-1710
How do I pay for my prescriptions?
The charge is placed on your student account and payment can be made in person at the Bursar’s office or by accessing your online account at “My SFSU” account. http://www.sfsu.edu/student/ . Charges will generally appear on your Bursar account two (2) business days after the charge has been made. Payment will be accepted online with a MasterCard, Discover, or American Express; or at the Bursar’s Office with cash or check.
Can I use a prescription insurance card at the Student Health Service Pharmacy?
We only accept the Family PACT card. We do not take any other type of prescription insurance card. We will give you a receipt for each prescription to send to the insurance company that provides your prescription drug coverage. Not all-insurance plans allow this process. To guarantee that you will be reimbursed, check with your insurance plan before getting your prescription filled. You may also take your prescription to a local participating pharmacy.
If I have a prescription with refills originally filled at another pharmacy, can I have my prescription filled at the SHS Pharmacy?
Yes, we are able to accept your prescription as long as there are valid refills on the prescription and if our pharmacy carries the medication. Call the pharmacy refill phone number (415) 338-1710 or come by the SHS Pharmacy with the medication vial or package. The prescription label lists necessary information, including the Rx number and contact information for the other pharmacy. Transferred prescriptions are usually ready in about 24 hours. We encourage patients to request their refills ahead of time.
How can I refill a prescription?
Prescriptions previously filled at SHS Pharmacy WITH REFILLS remaining (refills are noted on the bottom left hand corner of your prescription label) and prescriptions that have not expired (less than 1 year from the date originally written) may be filled in several ways:
(The Pharmacy will be closed for remodeling on Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm and will reopen on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 8:30 am.)
- Students may request a refill online from the SHS website. Order Your SFSU Pharmacy Prescription Refills Online!
- Students may call the Pharmacy at (415) 338-1710 and follow the prompts.
If your prescription has run out of refills, we will contact your healthcare provider for you. Please allow extra time (48-72 hours) to process your request. Your provider may either write a new prescription or may advise you to make an appointment. - Students may come in person to the Pharmacy during business hours.
What medications does SHS Pharmacy keep in stock?
The SHS Pharmacy has about 400 medications available. These are medicines most frequently prescribed by the SHS providers. Stop by the pharmacy or call us to ask if we have a particular medication in stock. Please ask the pharmacy staff about special orders if we do not carry your medicine. Special order medication may require a 24 hours to process.
