A Message from President Wong
As I write thIs we are bringing the academic year to a close. San Francisco’s spring weather serves as a great metaphor for the bright futures of our 2013 graduating class. It is rewarding to contemplate the futures of these 8,738 men and women and to reflect on my exciting first year on campus.
I have become acquainted with the many people who make SF State such an incredible university and learned firsthand about the accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff. Now that I’m settled in, I am eager to put new momentum behind our aspirations for the future.
Leading a public urban university is complicated. A great deal of time can be consumed worrying about budgets and state support, declining infrastructure and public safety. One of my chief responsibilities is lightening that load for the campus, so that our talented faculty and staff can stay focused on student success.
I am proud to see how well we respond to the needs of our students, including our returning veterans, some of whom are featured in this issue. That support enables our graduates to make powerful contributions to the world beyond our campus. I hope you will share in my excitement as you read on and discover alumni writing Pulitzer-winning poetry, improving the care of animals and beautifying the city, to name just a few of their achievements.
In an effort to move SF State into an even brighter future, the University is beginning a deliberate strategic planning discussion that will chart the path ahead. We will grapple with key questions to help us move forward, and I invite every member of our community to join in the conversation. It promises to be an exciting time and a productive process for our University. The excellence I see in every corner of this campus gives me great confidence about our future progress.
