SF State at the Movies
As we celebrate the 12th consecutive year of Oscar-nominations for our alumni, here's a look at some of our connections in Hollywood.
Graduate student Hart Perez just released "Behind the Curtain," a documentary about Associate Professor Joseph McBride, who played a reporter in the film "Cannonball" with alumnus David Carradine , who was in "Kung Fu: The Movie" with alumnus Michael Paul Chan. Chan starred in "The Joy Luck Club," which features sound work by alumnus Curtis Choy, the production sound editor for "Forbidden City," which was co-written by alumna/Professor Lorraine Dong. Dong also contributed her writing talents to "Sewing Woman," a film produced by alumnus Arthur Dong, whose documentary "Hollywood Chinese" features alumnus B.D. Wong. Wong starred in "Jurassic Park," which features Oscar-winning sound work from alumnus Shawn Murphy, the scoring mixer for "Schindler's List," a film with an Oscar-winning screenplay by alumnus Steven Zaillian. Zaillian wrote the screenplay for "Searching for Bobby Fischer," which features production design by alumnus David Gropman, who did the same for "Cider House Rules," a film starring alumnus Delroy Lindo. Lindo's acting credits include "The Exonerated" with alumnus Danny Glover, who provided his voice talents to "Antz," while alumna Denise Nolan Cascino served as the film's production supervisor. Cascino was the co-producer for "Shrek the Third," a film overseen by alumna Gloria Borders, studio head at PDI/Dreamworks and an Academy Award-winning sound effects editor. Borders was the associate producer of "Peter Pan," which features model- making by alumnus Tori Belleci. Belleci created the podracers for "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," which features voice work by alumnus Greg Proops and character animation by alumna Victoria Livingstone. Livingstone was a senior character animator for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," a film featuring sound work by Oscar-winning alumnus Christopher Boyes, who also developed the sound for "Tron: Legacy" alongside alumnus Chris Scarabosio. Scarabosio contributed his talents to the sound of "There Will Be Blood" with alumnus Jonathan Greber, who also worked on the sound for "Saving Private Ryan" alongside Oscar-winning alumnus Ethan Van der Ryn. Van der Ryn was the foley editor on "Bugsy" featuring Annette Bening who starred in alumna Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right.".
