International Relationship When Martin Morales (B.A., '91; M.A., '92) and Carolyn Thomas (B.A.,'95; M.A., '98) were married in July, they chose a four-tier wedding cake that paid homage to their international relations coursework at SFSU. The cake's 29 edible flags represented the couple's native countries, Argentina and Germany, countries they had visited and the nationalities of friends in attendance. Morales and Thomas made sure to invite their favorite professor, Dwight Simpson. "Simpson was a truly phenomenal teacher. He didn't make you learn -- he made you want to learn," Morales says. "He has been our teacher, mentor, friend and my inspiration." Following in Simpson's footsteps, Morales is now a professor of international relations and political science at the College of San Mateo. Thomas also chose a career with a global focus. She imports high-end foreign art and household furnishings. The couple's international relations-theme cake was made by Perfect Endings, a bakery that has created confections for high profile clients including Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump. A sort of celebrity itself, the cake has appeared in several bridal magazines. -- Adrianne Bee |
