Building
Reveals its True Identity
There's
a Chinese proverb that states "the beginning of wisdom is to call
things by their right name." Last year, a group of ethnic studies
students decided it was time for the campus to get wise. Their College's
building -- long known as the Psychology building -- needed a name that
would reflect both Colleges housed inside. Led by grad student Carlos
Hagedorn, the determined group spent a semester drumming up student support
and meeting with department chairs and deans across campus before they
gave a presentation to the president's senior management team. The hard
work of their "We Are Ethnic Studies" organization paid off
in May, when the words ethnic studies and psychology were affixed above
the building's main entrance in large bronze letters. "We are the
birthplace of ethnic studies and creation of the College helped put San
Francisco State on the map," says Hagedorn, adding that the new name
on the building gives students across campus "a sense of pride and
a sense of identity."
