The National Institutes of Health (NIH) designed the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program to serve undergraduates majoring in Biomedical Sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry) at SFSU. The program at SFSU has been modeled to train qualified students in strong science curricula and to provide a high quality research experience under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
The goal of the SFSU RISE Honors program is ultimately to increase the level of diversity among scientists entering biomedical careers and completing professional degree programs in the basic biomedical sciences. At SFSU we provide a unique academic support system and a stimulating research opportunity to undergraduate students who have been historically underserved. The program prepares students to become research/medical scholars. Upon completion of the baccalaureate at SFSU RISE students typically will enter Master's, PhD or MD programs.

The RISE program provides an annual scholarship and travel funds for attendance at a major scientific conference. RISE students receive this financial support to encourage full commitment to the goals of the program. RISE students are expected to maintain a full-time student load of 12 units/semester and maintain a B (3.0) grade point average. Student performance will be evaluated each semester and those students making appropriate progress will be continued.
The RISE program is funded by the NIH. All applicants will be considered.
