Spring 2011 Election:
At-Large Academic Senator
Eileen F. Levy
Associate Professor, School of Social Work
Dear Colleagues,
As a candidate for the position of At-Large Academic Senator for a three-year term, 2011-2014, I ask for your consideration and support of my candidacy. I have been on the faculty of the School of Social Work since 1991, and served as Director of the School of Social Work from 2001-2007. I am about to complete my first three-year term as At-Large Academic Senator (2008-2011), prior to which I served two years as Senate representative from the College of Health and Human Services. I am deeply committed to shared governance and believe strongly in the efficacy of the Academic Senate as the policy-making arm of the academic community at SF State. I wish to continue to serve the University in this capacity, which is why I am seeking an additional term as At-Large Academic Senator.
During my five years as an Academic Senator, I have assumed a variety of leadership roles. In my first year as a Senator, I was a member of the Curriculum Review and Approval Committee (CRAC), and the following year was elected to chair the committee. I served in this capacity for one year, prior to my taking a sabbatical leave from the university. While on sabbatical, I decided to run, and was elected for, At-Large Senator. I chose to be a member of the Faculty Affairs Committee (FAC), and was elected to chair the committee by my fellow senators. I am currently in my third year as chair of FAC, and feel satisfied with the accomplishments of the committee during that time. Under my leadership, the committee worked on several policy initiatives and revisions, including revisions to the University Retention, Tenure, and Promotion Policy, Policy on Temporary Faculty, and currently, working on major revisions to the Department Chair policy. If elected as At-Large Academic Senator, I hope to continue to serve on FAC and to move forward with the myriad issues that confront us as a campus in these difficult times. I look forward to working with the new Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, who is an ex officio member of the Faculty Affairs Committee, and strengthening the relationship between the Academic Senate and the University administration.
In addition to my work as Chair of FAC, for the past four years, I have served on the Senate Executive Committee. I have first hand knowledge of the current fiscal and organizational issues facing us at San Francisco State, and am committed to fostering an environment where all people’s voices are heard and considered, and shared governance is actualized. I have good working relationships with university administration and understanding the major challenges facing the university at this time. I hope that you support my candidacy and elect me for an additional term as At-Large Academic Senator.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
