ACADEMIC SENATE RESOLUTION
IN SUPPORT OF CIVIL DISCOURSE AND THE PRINCIPLES OF THE ACADEMY

WHEREAS . established practice defines all universities, colleges, and other schools, in the words of Judge Learned Hand later used by the Supreme Court of the United States, as a “free
marketplace of ideas” that should encourage open discourse allowing expression of all
perspectives; and
WHEREAS
San Francisco State University has long dedicated itself to creating and maintaining an and
environment or learning that promotes freedom of expression, academic and civil discourse,
respect for diversity; and
WHEREAS
any speech or activity that involves intimidation, bigotry, threat, or hate undermines the
very foundations of our university and its principles; therefore, be it
RESOLVED
that the Academic Senate, San Francisco State University applaud and endorse the further
May 13, 2002 report on Campus issued by President Robert A. Corrigan (attached);
and be it
RESOLVED
that the Academic Senate call upon all members of the campus community to foster civil
the discourse both in and out of the classroom and to lead by example in treating all
members of community with respect and courtesy; and be it further
RESOLVED
that the Academic Senate call upon all members of the campus community to promote a
hate-free environment fostering the discourse appropriate to a university setting.
