Academic Senate Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Public Safety

Academic Senate Policy S93-188

At its meeting of April 13, 1993, the Academic Senate approved without dissent the following policy to establish the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Public Safety:

A.

CHARGE

To advise the Director of Public Safety, the Academic Senate Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Public Safety shall:

1.

Conduct a campus needs assessment to determine:

a.

What role DPS should play in support of the university mission and goals.

b.

What image the campus community perceives as appropriate for DPS.

c.

What policy and safety services are needed/desired.

2.

Review existing DPS philosophy, policies, procedures, and training to ensure that they are consistent with the needs, desires, and overall mission of the campus.

3.

Establish clear lines of communication between DPS, Student Affairs, faculty, staff, students, and the administration with regard to the handling of student-related problems.

4.

Review resources and Department of Public Safety staffing needs.

5.

Identify professional development needs for the Department of Public Safety.

6.

Hold open hearings to promote campus-wide input from faculty, staff, and students.

7.

Provide a report, with recommendations for action, to the Director of Public Safety who will review, make responses, and send both documents to the President.

8.

Send a copy of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee's report to the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate for information only.

9.

The committee will dissolve after submitting its report.

Clerical support for the committee shall be furnished by the Department of Public Safety.

B.

MEMBERSHIP

The Academic Senate Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Public Safety shall consist of the following members:

1.

Four faculty members appointed by the Academic Senate Executive Committee. At least one member should have experience in the criminal justice field.

2.

Two students appointed by the President of the Associated Students.

3.

Two Residence Halls students appointed by the President of the Residence Hall Association, one of whom shall be a student resident and the other a student resident assistant.

4.

One Student Activities staff member appointed by the Dean of Students.

5.

The Student Discipline Officer.

6.

The Coordinator of the S.A.F.E. Place.

7.

The Housing and Residential Services Coordinator of Student Life.

8.

One member from Personnel Services staff appointed by the Director of Personnel Services.

9.

One member appointed by the SFSU Labor Council.

10.

One member of the Department of Public Safety appointed by the Director of Public Safety.

11.

One campus building coordinator elected by the building coordinators.

C.

CHAIR

The Academic Senate Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Public Safety shall elect its own chair.
