ADVISING FOR PROBATIONARY STUDENTS

Academic Senate Policy S91-168

At its meeting of February 26, 1991, the Academic Senate approved the following policy recommendation from the Board of Appeals and Review (BOAR):

WHEREAS:

There is currently no effective mechanism for intervening with probationary students to encourage them to seek advising; and

WHEREAS:

Such intervention is desirable, perhaps necessary, to ensure their retention; and

WHEREAS:

At present, probationary students are directed to seek advising only after they are subject to disqualification; and

WHEREAS:

Administrative-academic probation could be used to help probationary students, ensuring that they receive advising, and promoting their retention; and

WHEREAS:

BOAR already has the authority as recognized in the SFSU Bulletin to place students on administrative-academic probation; and

WHEREAS:

BOAR has developed and forwarded to President Corrigan in May, 1990 two recommendations which will implement current Bulletin policy and allow early intervention in the cases of probationary students:

1.

Colleges or departments, at their discretion, may add the following language to letters addressed to probationary students: "Failure to consult with a department advisor may result in administrative-academic probation. If placed on administrative-academic probation, your CAR materials for the coming semester will be held by the Registrar and you will not be allowed to enroll in classes."

2.

In order to make administrative-academic probation a viable sanction we recommend that, in selected instances consistent with Bulletin authorization, colleges or departments may request that BOAR place a student on administrative-academic probation. Students placed on administrative-academic probation would be required to get clearance from their academic advisors before registering for their courses for the next semester; and

WHEREAS:

The Academic Policies Committee commended BOAR for its thoughtful consideration of these policy matters in September, 1990 and endorsed its recommendations for implementing current University policy regarding administrative-academic probation; therefore be it

RESOLVED:

That the Academic Senate, SFSU, endorse the recommendations from BOAR as approved by the Academic Policies Committee with the following refinements:

1.

Any unit that implements Recommendation l should already have a well-defined advising mechanism in place;

2.

Criteria for putting a student on administrative-academic probation should be reviewed by BOAR;

3.

BOAR should review and act on any request for administrative-academic probation by the beginning of the semester following the request semester; (This will allow students time to get advice before their CAR materials are held up.); and be it further

RESOLVED:

That this policy and its implementation be reviewed by BOAR and the Academic Senate after two years (Fall, 1993).
