POLICY FOR UNIVERSITY-WIDE SCHOLASTIC HONORARY SOCIETIES

ACADEMIC SENATE POLICY S87-150

At its meeting of May 12, 1987, the Academic Senate approved the following resolution on University-wide Scholastic Honorary Societies:

WHEREAS

there exist several national honorary societies that afford recognition to all undergraduate students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement in their coursework, regardless of major field; and

WHEREAS

at least two of these scholastic honorary societies have expressed interest in establishing a chapter at San Francisco State University; and

WHEREAS

no policy exists to guide the University in selecting the national scholastic honorary society that would be most beneficial to students at San Francisco State University; therefore be it

RESOLVED

that any national scholastic honorary society selected by San Francisco State University should add to the distinction that the University itself already provides by awarding degrees with honors; and be it further

RESOLVED

that the SFSU chapter of any university-wide scholastic honorary society should require a minimum GPA of 3.50 - equivalent to that now required for students to be invited to the Honors Convocation; and be it further

RESOLVED

that the establishment of an SFSU chapter of a university-wide scholastic honorary society should be sponsored by at least ten tenured faculty members of the University; and be it further

RESOLVED

that the Educational Policies Council shall recommend to the Academic Senate by November 1, 1987 which, if any, university-wide national scholastic honorary society shall be invited to establish a chapter.
