Termination of Academic Senate Policy #S83-109
Use of 'U' Grade

At its meeting of December 5, 1995, the Academic Senate approved the termination of the following policy on the 'U' Grade: |

Whereas |
The Academic Senate recognizes that there is confusion about the use and effect of the 'U' grade, and |

Whereas |
It is not universally understood that a 'U' grade counts as an 'F' in computing grade points, and |
||
|
Whereas |
Alternatives to the 'U' grade are not fully utilized, therefore be it |
||
|
Resolved |
That the following information be distributed periodically to the faculty: |

Use of 'U' Grade Symbol |

|
1. |
Instructors should use two opportunities to drop students who are not in class: |
||
|
a. |
A student may be "bubbled out" on the first-day enrollment list. |
||
|
b. |
A student may be underlined on the 4th Week Verified Class List. (Such an administrative W requires dean or chair concurrence.) |
||
|
2. |
A 'U' grade is an Unauthorized Incomplete: it should be used for the student who comes to class and then disappears. In contrast, an 'F' indicates unsatisfactory course work. |
||
|
3. |
The 'U' grade is equivalent to an 'F' in computing grade point average. |
||
|
4. |
An 'I' (Incomplete) may be initiated by instructor or student. It should be given for students who have done a substantial portion of the course work. Instructor and students agree on conditions for removal of the Incomplete. 'I' becomes an 'F' if not completed within one calendar year. |
